Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world (founded in 1638), is located in the old town of Leiden. In 2000, we built a 12-metre-high Venlo greenhouse there.

12-metre-high Venlo structure for world-famous botanical garden

Commissioned by Leiden University, we built a greenhouse/winter garden called “Hortus Academicus Lugduno Batavus”. In response to the Hortus's wish to make the interior 12 metres high, a specific support structure was designed. This winter garden houses large tub plants from Mediterranean and South African regions, some of which are placed outside in the summer.

Optimal climate control

The winter garden is home to a variety of large plant collections, including carnivorous and potted plants, as well as other unusual specimens. To accommodate these, an optimal climate control system has been installed. This system also provides shelter for large potted plants that are brought outside in the summer.
As the Hortus has only a limited number of tall trees, a terraced design was chosen. This creates a lush, green effect with plants of varying heights. The terraces lead visitors to a spectacular bridge at the top, from which the greenhouse and the collection can be admired.
Due to the exceptional height and high wind load, this specific support structure was built. We also took into account the integration of catering facilities, shops, and educational spaces, creating a sustainable, functional, and attractive greenhouse that blends in perfectly with the historic Hortus.

Expert in botanical greenhouses

In addition to this well-known botanical garden, EdenParks has also built greenhouses for Keukenhof, Flora Botanischer Garten, Inverewe and RHS Wisley. These are often unique structures that, in addition to their striking design, require specific climate control for the rare plant collections they house.
