Responsible for the design and construction of the exhibition greenhouse, we found a connection with the design of both the existing garage and the emperor's mausoleum located further away.

Purpose	exposition greenhouse

With the transformation of Huis Doorn into a museum dedicated to “The Netherlands and the First World War”, a stylish exhibition greenhouse has been added, containing many memories of WWI. In addition to the car of the last German Emperor Wilhelm II, who lived there in exile from 1920 to 1941, the exhibition tells the story of mobilisation, public opinion and civilian refugees.

Huis Doorn is a castle, knight's estate and country estate on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug in Doorn in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is best known for the German ex-emperor Wilhelm II, who lived there from 1920 until his death in 1941. ‘Huis Doorn connects the Netherlands in a unique way with European history. We now have a wonderful insight into a vanished European court culture, but also into how the story of the “great” European history of 1914-1918 extends to the Netherlands.’ (freely adapted from source: Huis Doorn newsletter)

Royal opening

In 2014, Princess Beatrix officially opened the new ‘Netherlands and the First World War Pavilion’ on the grounds of Huis Doorn. This is not the first time one of our projects has been given a royal opening. The Klok en Peel Museum, the Willem-Alexander Pavilion at Keukenhof, the World Horti Center and Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen have also had this honour. Our projects have also been officially opened by royalty internationally, such as The Glasshouse at RHS Garden Wisley and The Bayan Botanical Glasshouse in Kuwait.
