Butterfly temple and facades for Europe's largest indoor jungle

The Wildlands theme park consists of three worlds: the icy polar region of Notica, the dry savannah of Serenga and the Jungola jungle. The “jungle” features a small tropical greenhouse of approximately 1,100 m2 and the large Jungola greenhouse of approximately 2 hectares. Due to its expertise in publicly accessible greenhouse constructions, Edenparks, part of Smiemans Projecten, was involved in the construction of these two glass structures.

Butterfly temple with Angkor Wat ruins

EdenParks provided the steel structure, facades and roof for the small greenhouse, which is intended for butterflies, pythons, otters and other animals. The roof is covered with a special 3-layer ETFE film that is extremely durable, has a high insulation value and is resistant to radiation. In addition, the special film allows not only daylight but the entire light spectrum to pass through.

These factors are essential for the tropical plants and animals in the greenhouse. You really feel like you're outside!

The advantages of a glass construction with ETFE foil:

  • visitors can see the animals clearly – plenty of natural daylight enters the building,
  • the experience of nature – the feeling of being outdoors is brought indoors,
  • the insulation provided by the 3-layer ETFE foil system – energy savings,
  • the butterflies can survive because the full light spectrum passes through
  • the animals can live as naturally as possible – imitation of the tropical climate

Jungola; Europe's largest indoor jungle

The construction of the large Jungola greenhouse is the largest project for the zoo, for which EdenParks installed the facades. We opted for polycarbonate because of its high insulation value and transparency. Polycarbonate is also a very cost-efficient solution.

23 metres high, 6,200 m2 in size

The highest point of the greenhouse is approximately 23 metres, but because it is 4 metres below ground level, it appears less high to local residents. This tropical greenhouse, which is almost four football fields in size, is home to various species of birds, monkeys and elephants. Visitors can view the animals from a small boat.

Official opening by King Willem Alexander

The new Wildlands theme park was built on a 22-hectare site and took a total of 2.5 years to complete. It replaced the old zoo, which had to be relocated because it was located in the centre of Emmen. The old zoo in Emmen closed its doors on 31 December 2015, and in March 2016, Wildlands, Adventure Zoo Emmen was opened by King Willem Alexander.

Over the years, several projects have been opened by members of the Royal Family, such as Huis Doorn, World Horti Center and RHS Wisley.
