Two special projects at new zoo in The Netherlands
Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen is built on 22 hectares and is divided into three zones; called Jungola, Serenga and Nortica. EdenParks worked on two projects; the large greenhouse "Jungola" and the Butterfly temple are now both visited by the public.
Glass construction ‘Rimbula’ is the largest tropical greenhouse in Europe
With an area of approximately 18,000 m², 23 metres in height and situated four metres under the building line, the enormous glasshouse ‘Rimbula’, is the a new home to birds, monkeys and elephants. EdenParks is responsible for the 6,200 m² curtain wall, made from polycarbonate because of its excellent insulation properties, transparency and favourable pricing.
Butterfly temple with ruins ruin inspired by Anghor Wat
The smaller glasshouse of 1,100 m² has a higher section accommodating a butterfly house and a habitat for other reptiles, as well as a lower section which is 200 m² in size. This is intended for the cultivation of plants, caterpillars and butterflies. EdenParks has responsibility for the steel construction work, the curtain walls and the roof, the latter using a special 3-layer ETFE foil, (inflatable cushions) which is extremely hard-wearing, has a high insulation value and is UV-resistant.
- visitors can see the animals well - there is a lot of natural daylight coming in,
- the experience of nature - the feeling from outside is taken inside,
- the insulation that the 3-layer ETFE foil system offers - saving energy,
- the butterflies can survive because of the full light spectrum
- the animals can live as naturally as possible - imitation of the tropical climate in which they normally live.
- the special 3-layer ETFE foil is extremely hard-wearing, has a high insulation value and is UV-resistant.
Official opening by King Willem Alexander
The new theme park Wildlands was built on a terrain of 22 hectares and the construction took a total of 2.5 years. It replaced the old zoo that had to leave because it stood in the center of Emmen. The old zoo in Emmen closed its doors on 31 December 2015 and in March 2016, Wildlands, Adventure Zoo Emmen was opened by Dutch King Willem Alexander.
